Levi Pettit’s Experience in Family Office Investments

Levi Pettit’s career in finance took a significant turn when he joined a first-generation, single-family office as an investment associate. This experience provided him with invaluable insights into the world of private wealth management and alternative investments.

Describing his role, Pettit says, “My role at the family office was generally on the private side, dealing more with alternative investments, private equity, venture capital, commercial real estate; we would do direct investing, as well as allocating some investing in funds.”

This position allowed Pettit to work closely with high-level decision-makers, an aspect he particularly valued. “You have a direct line of communication to the most important people in the company. It felt something I could see myself doing long-term,” he reflects.

Pettit’s responsibilities in the family office were diverse and challenging. He was tasked with “evaluating investment options, conducting transaction due diligence and monitoring the investments in its portfolio.” This hands-on experience with various investment vehicles provided him with a comprehensive understanding of wealth management strategies.

Despite the valuable experience gained, Pettit eventually felt that his growth opportunities within the family office environment might be limited. He explains, “I [could] only go so far as the managing partner [wanted] to; at the end of the day, it’s his money, and I respect that.”

This realization led Pettit to pursue further education and broaden his horizons. “I was 28, and an MBA has always been in the back of my mind. I had just gotten married. We don’t have kids; we don’t have pets — so we packed up and moved out to California,” he says, referring to his decision to enroll in Pepperdine University’s Graziadio Business School.

Pettit’s experience in the family office played a crucial role in shaping his understanding of private wealth management and alternative investments, setting the stage for the next phase of his career development.
