Betsy DeVos is a reformer and her love for politics began way back when she was in the university. She was involved in campus politics and has been an active politician since then. The reforming trend runs in her family since her husband served as a Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan. Mrs. DeVos has been a leader of various party organizations, campaigns, and political action committees for the last 30 years. She served as the chairperson of the Michigan Republic Party for six years. Just like in politics, Betsy also seeks innovative solutions to social issues in the business world. Betsy is the chairperson of Windquest Group, a private multi-firm dealing with technology, clean energy, and manufacturing. Betsy established the firm in 1989 together with her husband, Dick DeVos. Most importantly, Betsy is a philanthropist, who has founded organizations like Betsy DeVos Family Foundation.
About Dick DeVos
Dick was born on October 21, 1955, and is the president of Windquest Group. Dick has been married to Betsy for more than 30 years, and they have four children. Dick graduated from Forest Hills Public Schools and Northwood University. His career life began in 1974 when he got a job at Amway Corporation, and he held positions in several divisions. Dick DeVos became the company’s vice president in 1984 before moving to Orlando Magic basketball franchise. Later in 1993, he went back to Amway, this time as the president.
I am encouraged by the success of Dick not only in his career life but also as a philanthropist. I like a message from Dick where he encourages people to be bold, humble, hard working, volunteer and take the first step now. Dick believes that the vital thing is to make a difference and follow your commitments. DeVos and his family are involved in many philanthropic deeds. Notably, I cannot fail to recognize the efforts of DeVos, his family and his basketball team towards the families of the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub. They donated $500,000 to assist the families after the tragedy. The West Michigan family donated $400,000 to help the 49 families.
Their stand on the anti-gay campaign cannot go unnoticed. DeVos lead Amway towards giving a donation of millions of dollars to fight the legalization of gay marriages. I think DeVos and his family are devoted towards helping the society through its donations. Research shows that the family is at number 20 on the top 50 givers list. For more information, click here. Dick believes that the foundation aims at serving as a vehicle for giving. In my opinion, the foundation is a faithful steward, based on how much it has impacted on the society all over the world.
